Carmarthen Leisure Centre has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
It is the only council-run facility in Wales to reach the final of the ukactive Awards 2018 under the UK Active Club of the Year category.
To qualify for entry the centre had to demonstrate that it had made substantial progress and exceeded expectations in the last 12 months.
Members of the council’s sports and leisure team will now to wait until June to find out if they’ve won.
In the last six years the centre has raised the bar – gym memberships have soared to 3,092 compared to 879 in 2012 – a huge increase of 250 per cent.
Customer satisfaction has seen a 16 per cent increase in the last year compared to the year before and exceeding national and international benchmarks in eight of the past 12 months.
The Learn to Swim programme is up by 25% with 773 swimmers taking part compared to 617 in 2012.
The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Peter Hughes-Griffiths said: “We are delighted to have made it to the final and it reflects all the hard work our officers have made to ensure we give our members the best experience. We’re all very excited at the prospect of winning this sought-after title.”
